Two years ago the Florida Legislature passed a law requiring vehicles to give three feet clearance when passing cyclists. This was a good thing that can make our roads safer for cyclists. Now we need to help educate people about the law.

Florida cyclists can now purchase a new jersey that delivers a bold and powerful message just as drivers approach cyclists from behind. It’s called the “3 Feet Please” jersey and the objective is to place this message on the back of hundreds of Florida cyclists to spread the word about the three foot clearance law. The goal is to see fewer of us injured, or worse, killed.

My name is Joe Mizereck and I live in Tallahassee. You may be wondering why I’m doing this. It’s really very simple. I designed this jersey because I love riding my bikes. However, I don’t like it when cars get dangerously close to me as I ride. Most drivers are courteous and they give me space. But, there are a large number of drivers who just don’t get it. They don’t get the fear that sweeps over me as they pass within inches of my body. And they don’t get how hitting me would change lives---theirs, mine and my family’s.

I know you love riding your bikes as much as I do. It’s my hope that this “3 Feet Please” jersey will remind drivers to share the roads that belong to all of us and to give us at least 3 feet clearance as they pass. This will make our riding safer and far more enjoyable.
